The Regal Theatre stands proudly at Hay Street and Rokeby Road, serving as a beloved and iconic landmark in Subiaco.
In 1937, playwright Dorothy Hewett’s father and grandfather commissioned a “hard-top cinema” on the former Coliseum Open Air Gardens site.
The Coliseum was likely the first theatre in suburban Perth specifically built to showcase moving pictures for eager audiences.
Architect William G. Bennett designed the new cinema, basing his work on a sketch from William T. Leighton’s office.
This stunning theatre remains one of Western Australia’s most significant and well-preserved examples of classic art deco architecture.
The Regal was placed on the State’s heritage list of buildings in 1994. It is listed with the National Trust and is registered with the Australian Heritage Commission.
