Regal Theatre

The Regal Theatre stands proudly at Hay Street and Rokeby Road, serving as a beloved and iconic landmark in Subiaco.

In 1937, playwright Dorothy Hewett’s father and grandfather commissioned a “hard-top cinema” on the former Coliseum Open Air Gardens site.

The Coliseum was likely the first theatre in suburban Perth specifically built to showcase moving pictures for eager audiences.

Architect William G. Bennett designed the new cinema, basing his work on a sketch from William T. Leighton’s office.

This stunning theatre remains one of Western Australia’s most significant and well-preserved examples of classic art deco architecture.

The Regal was placed on the State’s heritage list of buildings in 1994. It is listed with the National Trust and is registered with the Australian Heritage Commission.

Fremantle Prison

Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s most fascinating and historically significant attractions.

Its history dates back to the early days of Western Australia, playing a crucial role in the state’s development. As the largest convict-built structure in Western Australia and the most well-preserved convict site in the nation. Freo Prison stands as a remarkable piece of history.

In 2010, The Prison became the first building in Western Australia to be included on the World Heritage List. It was inscribed on the World Heritage list as part of a serial nomination with ten other Australian Convict Sites.

The site is also recognized on the National Heritage List and the State Register of Heritage Places. Additionally, it is classified by the National Trust and forms part of Fremantle’s West End Conservation Area.

Decommissioned as a maximum-security prison in 1991, The Prison was used as a place of incarceration for nearly 140 years. With death row, solitary confinement cells, and gallows, it serves as a stark reminder of a harsh penal system that existed until relatively recently.

Since opening to the public in 1992, The Gaol has become a thriving tourist attraction, welcoming thousands of visitors each year.

Entry to the Gatehouse is free of charge and includes: the Convict Café, Gift Shop, Prison Gallery, Convict Depot and Museum.

Without a doubt, the highlight of a visit to the Prison is the entertaining tours conducted by experienced tour guides who bring the rich folklore and stories of the Prison to life.  With a choice of intriguing day tours, spine-chilling torchlight tours and ‘extreme heritage’ tunnel tour adventures, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Astor Theatre

Astor Theatre is a two-storey commercial building constructed in 1914/15, by Simon B. Alexander, to a design by David McClure. Originally built in Federation Free Classical style, it was extensively renovated, in 1939, in the Inter-War Art Deco style to plans drawn by cinema architect William Leighton. Further renovations were carried out in 1989, by Philip McAllister.

Our History

The Astor Theatre has not always been known by this name. When it was first opened on 5 November 1919 it was called The Lyceum. Architect and owner-builder, Simon Bremner Alexander claimed it was the coolest building in the state. At the time this was due to the exceptional ventilation but we will reclaim the title for other reasons.

The venue was multi-purpose back then too and on Tuesday and Thursday nights it was hired for dancing. The orchestra also made use of The Lyceum. Next door to the venue was an open-air theatre where silent pictures continued in the gardens even after sound made its way into theatre.

In 1930 it was reinvented again and named the State Theatre and State Summer Gardens and later in the ’30s it got a facelift and extensive renovations. The gardens were closed in 1970.

Finally in 1941, the venue became known as what it is today, the Astor Theatre. The venue had to lose ‘State’ from its title due to a government decree that no private company could use the term.

As time went on the Astor was spilt into two theatres for adult and Italian films, was used as a bingo hall, accommodated karate and was threatened with extinction when in 1988 there was a call for it to be demolished. Public outcry prevented this and it is now heritage listed.

In 1991, the theatre was completely refurbished again and many of these elements remain today.

A new era has begun…
